It is important to maintain the cleanliness and efficiency of your Mini Split System for a variety of reasons. The basics are that a lack of maintenance can increase the cost of power, shorten the lifespan of the system, and have negative consequences on the health of the people living within the home.
Cost:
The unit may deteriorate faster if the unit isn’t properly cared for every month or so. If debris builds up within the system, the cost of running it will greatly increase. Replacement parts will be needed more often if the unit is not cleaned regularly. All parts that require cleaning are easily accessible and straightforward to clean, why not take the time and save some money?
Health:
A unit that is not cleaned properly at the right intervals is prone to accruing mold or mildew in various points within the ductless AC System. This accumulation can lead to a foul smell and even cause respiratory problems and other health issues for those who breathe this contaminated air consistently.
Sounds Important! How Do I Start?

Inside Unit:
To clean the inside unit, start by wiping off the exterior of the unit with a damp cloth then drying it with another cloth.
The second step is to pop open the front panel of the unit and remove the filters. These filters can be cleaned with mild detergent and water and placed back into the system once completely dry.
Next, you can remove the cabinet to reach the evaporator coil. Using a dry cloth, remove any dust, mold or debris that has built up on the coils. The cabinet and front panel can now be put back into place.
The last step on the inside is to clean the condensate pan and drain. You may use soapy water or bleach if there is obvious mold growth or any other hard to remove particles.

Outside Unit:
The first and easiest step of cleaning the outside portion of the unit is to remove any blockages surrounding the unit such as leaves and twigs.
After this, you can use a coil cleaning tool or a garden hose to spray down the entirety of the unit. Any grime on the unit will now be easier to remove with a cloth, just make sure the unit is dried before proceeding to the next step.
Your hose and cloth or scrubbing brush can be used to clean off the grille and fan cage. If the grille can be removed, a damp cloth can be used to clean off and rinse the fan blades on the inside carefully. Again, it is important to dry off each part of the unit to avoid rusting.
Any dust within the mini split system can be removed with a vacuum and the proper attachment.
The condensate pan and drain can be cleaned the same way as the indoor portion of the unit. Use bleach or soapy water if there are hard to remove residues such as mold or dirt. Use a hose to clean the drain and remove any stoppages that may prevent water flow.
Next Steps:
After cleaning and drying each part of the ductless AC System, there is no need to worry about it for at least a month. You may be able to go longer depending on the climate and the rate of debris build up, but it is best to check on the system at least every month. If it is looking dirty or showing signs of decreased efficiency, it is best to go through the steps once more. It doesn’t take long to clean, and it is definitely worth saving money and the health of any residents.
